This island is located in Florida Bay, which is part of the Everlglades National Park. Reservations are required and can be made in Flamingo. This island is in the "middle of nowhere", but believe it or not, it becomes like Grand Central Station on weekends. The reason is that the Park Service has placed a Port-A-John there, and weekend boaters up from the keys know about it. It is the only toilet for a good many miles.
On weekdays, the situation is much better, but expect a couple of boaters anyway. The Port-A-John is next to the boat landing, and the campsite extends back a bit. I placed a sign ("Nudist area today") next to the water, and stayed on the far side of my tent when I heard boats arriving. A few people laughed at the sign, but no one bothered me or complained.
Swimming is nice here, as the water is clear and deep. You can see the fish, so fishing may be good as well.A hand held GPS would be handy in finding this island since it is not visible from Flamingo, but good map and compass skills will do the job as well. Don't try to go without at least a map and compass. Maps can be purchased in the park, or take your Gazetteer along. Good weather is a must for this trip, since Florida bay is shallow and becomes choppy very easily.
The following GPS coordinates will get you close enough to the island (they are estimated from a chart, but they will get you in sight at least:
24 degrees 58.9 minutes North80 degrees 49.5 minutes West
